Our Story
Bergen Engines can trace its origins back to 1855, growing to become one of the leading shipyards in Norway. Today we build medium-speed liquid and gas fuelled reciprocating engines for marine and land-based applications worldwide. Our engines can be found operating in some of the most demanding and hostile environments on earth.
All Bergen Engines are produced at our factory in Hordvik, just 20 km north of Bergen, Norway. Of the more than 7,000 iconic Bergen engines built to date, around half are still in service today. We are well known for our quality and reliability.
Not only do we build the finest medium speed engines available, we also assemble and test complete generator sets, design modular power plants and partner to provide turn-key microgrid power solutions. Today we are one of Norway’s most important industries for the future with a key role in the transition to Net Zero.
The company is currently in one of its best periods in many years! In order to continue delivering and developing, we are now looking for more talented people to join our team.

Several of them emphasized that our work environment is the best they had ever experienced. This is not something we take for granted.To be able to deliver top-class engines, we rely on diverse employees with varying competence and expertise, and crucially, that they collaborate well. Just like a well-functioning engine, the work environment requires regular maintenance and care to function optimally.
It is important for us to take good care of our employees and offer various activities for team building, such as a hiking group, bowling, climbing, and football, just to name a few. We host summer parties, Christmas dinners, shared lunches, or enjoy coffee breaks together.
Many of our employees described working at Bergen Engines as inclusive, exciting, and fun/enjoyable — or "artig," as we would say it in Bergen.

We work together!
At Bergen Engines, we recognize the importance of continuous growth. We aim to provide an environment where you are professionally challenged and supported. This happens by letting you participate in different projects and take on responsibility, working closely with different trade groups and departments. Team leaders provide good follow-up, distributing work evenly so you get the necessary practice to master required skills.
The work is consistently varied, offering opportunities for learning new things. Building a single engine requires the collaboration of 11 different trade groups. This structure provides various pathways across departments for employees to gain experience and broaden their competence.
